Gary Noesner invested 30 years of his life as an investigator, hostage negotiator, and instructor in the FBI. Noesner spent most of his career investigating Middle East hijackings where American citizens had been being victimized. He served 23 years of his career as an FBI hostage negotiator. When Noesner retired it was as the Chief of the FBI’s Crisis Negotiation Unit, Critical Incident Response Group. He was also the first person to hold that position. Gary became heavily involved in numerous crisis incidents that included prison riots, religious zealot sieges, terrorist embassy takeovers, right-wing militia stand-offs and airplane hijackings. During his career Gary worked over 120 overseas kidnapping cases involving American citizens.

Life beyond the FBI

Following his retirement from the FBI Gary went on to become the Senior Vice President with Control Risks, an international risk consultancy, that assists clients in managing overseas kidnap incidents. Noesner now works as an independent contractor and he also transitioned to speaking at law enforcement conferences, as well as various other corporate gatherings around the world. Noesner has also featured in numerous television documentaries about hostage negotiation, terrorism, and kidnapping. He wrote his book Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator in 2010. The book was later used as the basis for a six part mini-series on Waco that aired on the Paramount Network on January 24, 2018. The six part Waco series has also been available on Netflix since April, 2020.
