Don Bentley spent a decade in the Army as an Apache helicopter pilot. During Operation Red Wing his mission went very wrong. Bentley was the air mission commander for the operation to rescue four SEALs that got pinned down on a mountain top in Afghanistan in 2005. One of the helicopters Don was charged with protecting was shot down. In the aftermath Bentley examined what happened and then he broke it down into three phases. Phase 1 had Don thinking about what could he could have done differently. Phase 2 had him wishing that he could get that moment back. In Phase 3 Bentley developed survivor’s guilt that he was alive and those he was supposed to protect were not. He was subsequently also awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal with “V” device for valor.

After his time in the military, Bentley also worked as an FBI special agent. The main focus on foreign intelligence and counterintelligence and he was also Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team member. While at the FBI, Don ran and recruited sources, which are what the intelligence community calls assets. The job primarily entailed convincing another person to work for him against their best interests. He found that these relationship always seems to develop and he had to deal with the fear of asking someone to go into harm’s way on his behalf.
