Carlson then served as a Targeting Analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency’s Counterterrorism Center. Where she specialized in threats and attack plans that were directed against the U.S. and Europe. Sarah would go on to complete multiple rotations with the Directorate of Operations. On the 26th July 2014, U.S. embassy personnel were safely evacuated from Tripoli in an overland convoy to Tunisia, during an intensely kinetic period of the Libyan civil war. The evacuation proved to be the culmination of Sarah’s one-year deployment to Tripoli, during which time she served in harm’s way with great honor and distinction.

She received dozens of awards for her service from both CIA and DIA, these also including exceptional performance awards, meritorious unit citations, and warzone related honors. Since leaving the CIA, Sarah has continued in public service with local government as an emergency operations manager. She is also an author of her first book, IN THE DARK OF WAR: A CIA Officer’s Inside Account of the Evacuation from Libya.
